Turtle Park

Turtle Park was formerly an the site of an abandoned building and parking lot which provided poor habitat for wildlife and contributed polluted runoff to the adjacent Milwaukee River. Sediment and other pollutants from this site also threatened the integrity of a recently-constructed fish spawning shoal on the river bed immediately adjacent to the property.

Our activities in caring for this land have included removing structures along the shoreline; stabilizing the streambank; removing invasive species; and restoring native habitat next to the river. The overarching goal of this project is to establish a buffer along the river, and reduce the amount of pollution entering the Milwaukee River in order to improve water quality. This restoration site is connected to many of our other projects which share the common goal of restoring land in highly disturbed, urban areas along the Milwaukee River.
